Kiwis are getting hyped up about recent sporting events such as the Fifa World Cup, Super Rugby final, and NBA playoffs, with a surge in searches for sporting memorabilia, team apparel, and player names, according to Trade Me data.
The figures show that the Fifa World Cup had created a huge wave of interest months before its commencement, with searches for “All Whites” skyrocketing 187 per cent in the first half of this year.
The tournament’s breakout star, Tim Payne, saw his popularity explode on social media last week. This led to a rise in the number of fans wanting his jersey.
Sports lovers are also flocking to Trade Me to find supporter gear ahead of the Super Rugby final between the Hurricanes and the Chiefs, with searches for “Hurricanes rugby” up by 60 per cent year on year.
In addition, the New York Knicks’ successful run in the NBA playoffs also led to a massive increase in searches for “Knicks” on the marketplace.
Trade Me spokesperson Tiana Barns said the data reveals a strong connection between major sporting moments and consumer behaviour.
“When a big game is on, or a Kiwi athlete shines on the world stage, we see an immediate and often massive reaction on our site. It’s clear that New Zealanders love to show their support, whether that’s by searching for a team jersey or a player who has captured the nation’s attention.”
According to Trade Me, popular listings include the Jalen Brunson Knicks Statement Edition Jersey, Retro Hurricanes Jersey, Tim Payne – All Whites Jersey and 2016 Chiefs Jersey.
“With Kiwi sporting fever at an all-time high, it is a great time to list any sports memorabilia or apparel you might have tucked away in the wardrobe,” Barns continued.
“Fans are actively searching for gear to support their teams right now, meaning your old jerseys or collectibles could be snapped up quickly – and for a premium price.”
