Wellington clothing store Hurricane Denim will close down permanently on February 18, after more than 30 years of trading.
The brand made an announcement on its Facebook yesterday, marking the end of an era for the fourth-generation local retailer which specialised in denim from a broad range of brands.
According to Stuff, Hurricane Denim, founded by David Byrne in 1991, is closing its doors because he wants to spend more time relaxing after suffering a heart attack a year ago, and his six-year lease on the Willis Street business is soon to expire.
He will relocate to Japan to support his wife, Kylie Archer, who is now serving as New Zealand’s Trade Commissioner.
His other store, Miss Wong Clothier on College Street, will close on the same day.
“We have been proud to dress generations of Wellingtonians, with a great following all over Aotearoa,” the brand wrote on its Facebook post.
“We really appreciate all of the support over the years, we look forward to leaving on a high and celebrating over 30 years of feeding a hungry denim market.”
Hurricane Denim is offering 20 per cent off in-store and online purchases.
