Auckland retailers expect the newly opened City Rail Link to drive foot traffic back into the inner city, following more than a decade of construction disruptions and challenging economic conditions.
The $5.5 billion infrastructure project opened, with a strong initial turnout despite the brief closure of Waitematā station due to a minor fire.
According to Carolyn Young, CEO of Retail NZ, the multi-billion-dollar rail network is projected to increase public transport capacity into the CBD by up to 50 per cent for residents living within a 30-minute radius. Commuter forecasts estimate peak-time usage will reach up to 19,000 passengers.
“While this morning has been busier than anticipated, we will be hoping for sustained numbers to bring more people into the city that has been hit hard with business closures amid the more than ten-year construction process alongside a period of difficult economic trading conditions.
“This increase will be welcomed by those inner-city businesses that have had to put up with 11 years of construction, road cones, closed streets and the rise of people working from home,” said Young.
Industry advocates hope the improved rail connections will encourage office workers to return to the CBD and recommend hosting additional inner-city events to maximise public transport engagement.
While supporting major infrastructure investments to strengthen economic growth, Retail NZ emphasised the need for better mitigation strategies during long-term public works.
“What we are hoping to see with future infrastructure projects is greater coordination with business to ensure that disruptions can be limited and provide support for businesses throughout the construction phase,” Young added.
