Smiths City, the more than century-old electrical goods retailer, has relaunched under new ownership less than a year after its liquidation.

And it’s pivoting to e-commerce.

The retailer entered voluntary administration in September 2025, before entering liquidation in October. Its 108-year-old flagship store in Christchurch was demolished in April this year.

But now, Auckland entrepreneurs Ric Sheehan and Michael Bell have purchased the company, while announcing their intentions to continue the company’s legacy.

“Smiths City has been part of Kiwi homes for over 100 years, and we felt a real responsibility to rebuild it properly,” the owners said. “Smiths City has a proud past, but we are focused on its future. We want to create a business our families, our customers and New Zealanders can be proud of.”

The new-look business will narrow its focus on homeware, office goods, and technology.

“Our focus is on creating a business that feels familiar, dependable and proudly Kiwi,” the owners added.

“We want customers to feel confident when they shop with Smiths City – whether they are purchasing for their home, their family or their workplace. We respect the history of Smiths City, but we are also excited about its future.”

“We’re here for the long term. This is about rebuilding trust, reconnecting with customers, and creating a business we – our kids – and our customers can be proud of.”
