Licensed stores such as supermarkets and bottle shops are no longer allowed to sell alcohol after 9 pm as Auckland Council’s new alcohol policy takes effect.
The policy also covers low and zero-alcohol products, such as 0 per cent alcohol beer.
However, restaurants and bars will be able to sell alcohol up until 4 am in the city centre, and 3 am outside of the city centre, as long as their licences permit it.
“We know that excessive alcohol can have a damaging effect on people’s lives, and so we need to make changes that make a difference to this very real issue,” said Councillor Josephine Bartley.
“Reducing the hours that alcohol is available, as well as the number of places it can be purchased means alcohol is less easy to access.”
Auckland provided a grace period for retailers to comply with the policy, which began in August. Bartley explained that the policy went through a long period of consultations with stakeholders.
Because of the new rule, Retail NZ is reminding customers to treat retail workers with respect despite the frustration brought about by the changes.
“This means some customers will need to change their shopping habits and plan ahead when they are buying alcohol,” said Carolyn Young, Retail NZ CEO.
“We ask that customers refer their enquiries to the Council, and to treat retail workers with respect and use language and behaviours that they would use with their whanau and friends.”
