German footwear brand Birkenstock is set to open its first specialist store in the South Island’s Christchurch CBD in late August.

The new venue will be located on the corner of High and Cashel Streets in the ANZ Centre. In Auckland, Birkenstock has a store at Newmarket and recently opened another in Takapuna.

“With over 13 metres of frontage, this site was perfect for Birkenstock to showcase our range, and introduce new styles previously not available to Christchurch,” said Shae Borman, head of retail for the brand’s local distributor, Brittain Wynyard & Co.

“Christchurch’s climate really suits our style of footwear and we’re confident the time is right for a specialist store in the central city.”

It was a coup for the CBD to attract a beloved brand such as Birkenstock, according to Annabelle Bramwell, retail leasing specialist at Colliers.
