Z Energy has unveiled a new retail store format as its strategy to adapt to changing customer tastes.

The roll-out of revamped stores began last year in Waiouru and are aimed at giving customers a quick, convenient and quality experience.

“We’re not their destination. They are on the way to somewhere. But we would like to become their destination between destinations,” said Andy Baird, Z’s GM of retail.

“We’re looking to sell and serve to our customers within 10 minutes. We want to be the first choice of coffee for people on the run.”

Z Energy said the store format features more counter and display space to range fresh foods and quality coffee. In addition, staff uniforms have been changed to get back to basics, with an orange or white top and black pants signalling a change to a hospitality feel – with staff comfort and pride top of mind.

The new store design will be expanded across 50 stores during the next three years.

Anna Lowe, Z relationship manager at Design & Build, said redesigned lighting and the use of textures would evoke the feel of a contemporary, fresh and inviting space, and concrete counter blocks provide an instant edge while “keeping it Kiwi”.

The convenience store features screens for promotions, which are easier and quicker to update than posters, and the design ensures self-checkouts can be introduced in the future.

“We’re aiming for quick transformations, and it’s like a big Lego set we can take pieces from and keep building in future,” explained Anna.
