Auckland suit retailer, Suits on Broadway, is the latest victim of Covid-19 disrupted trade, closing its doors after 30 years of operation. 

“All good things must come to an end and sadly it is time for us to close the doors for good,” the retailer announced on Facebook. “Dave and the family have made the hard decision to say goodbye to Suits on Broadway.”

While the business, like other retailers, has been severely affected by the uncertainty of the Covid-19 situation, the change of customers’ preference from formal menswear to more casual attire also contributed to the closure of Suits on Broadway.

The retailer told the New Zealand Herald that it was unable to trade for six months due to several lockdowns and alert level changes. With the postponement of events like weddings and conferences, demand for formal menswear has dropped. 

“There was always that direction of dressing a little bit more casually, but I think Covid has pushed that forward faster,” David Eggleton, the owner of Suits on Broadway, told the New Zealand Herald. 

“Seeing what Covid has done to the industry has been hard and trying to plan a future in such uncertain times has just been a bit much,” the suit retailer said on social media. 

Opened in 1992, Suits on Broadway was bought by Eggleton in 2004 and has been run by he and his family since then.
