The impending arrival of Australian retailer David Jones to Wellington is set to revitalise Wellington’s so-called Golden Mile on Lambton Quay.
Iconic store Kirkcaldie and Stains will shut up shop early next year to be replaced by David Jones after a makeover for the building.
Colliers International retail leasing specialist, Ty Dallas, said the arrival of David Jones had other Australian retail businesses wanting to set up shop.
“We are already receiving requests. They are, in fact, saying that ‘we want to be in the David Jones zone’,” he said.
Dallas would not reveal which companies had expressed interest. However he did say Melbourne-based retail store Seed Heritage would be opening on the corner of Lambton Quay and Grey Street next year.
He said the likelihood of the Australian firms moving to Wellington’s Golden Mile was high, but available retail space was a problem.
“Lambton Quay is currently 98 per cent leased, so the options are somewhat limited at the moment,”Dallas explained.
But, he added that some leases would expire soon, and that could mean opportunities for retailers wanting to get a spot on the Golden Mile.
