Nation of DIY baristas

coffee cup, coffee beansCanstar Blue has released the findings of its most recent survey into the habits of Kiwis and their home espresso machines, revealing that New Zealand is a nation of DIY baristas.

Close to half of New Zealanders say they prefer home brewed coffee to that bought in a cafe.

Other interesting findings include: 48 per cent saying that they are drinking more coffee since they purchased their espresso machines (this is especially common amongst men who are not only drinking it more at 51 per cent but also enjoying it more than professionally made brews compared to women); the majority being fairly confident in their barista abilities (78 per cent), especially when making coffee for guests; 70 per cent saying they have saved a lot of money by no longer purchasing cafe coffee; Wellingtonians being the most likely to get withdrawal headaches when they cut down on coffee consumption (28 per cent); Otago having the highest proportion of five cups a day drinkers (32 per cent); 37 per cent of Aucklanders using their coffee machines daily, with some using it more than once a day (18 per cent); and eighteen per cent only buying organic coffee beans/grinds, with men being the most conscious of where their beans come from (25 per cent) compared to women (10 per cent).

Barista at Fidel’s Cafe in Wellington, Connor Anderson, says there is a difference in quality and it is probably be the cost of having multiple coffees that entices people to use espresso machines at home. He adds that people seem to like coming into a place to drink coffee.
