A newly established police taskforce targeting retail crime in the Hutt Valley has arrested a known shoplifter just one hour into its first day on the job.
The 19-year-old man, suspected of committing multiple thefts across the Wellington District, was taken into custody shortly after the National Retail Crime Investigation Unit (NRCIU) referred his case to the newly formed local team.
Led by Sergeant Cameron Cross, the five-member task force is part of a six-month pilot initiative aimed at cracking down on retail crime in the region.
“We’ve seen other teams and task forces set up around the country having great results, and this area is a priority for police,” said inspector Shaun Lingard, area prevention manager for Hutt Valley.
“So we thought, what can we do here locally to have a dedicated focus on retail crime.”
The arrested man was already facing three active charges and had been linked to six additional shoplifting incidents. He now faces six further shoplifting charges and one charge of threatening behaviour.
Lingard says the early arrest sends a strong message. “We want our retailers to feel safer, and we want the community to know that this kind of behaviour won’t be tolerated.”
The task force’s success will be closely monitored and used as a benchmark to assess the effectiveness of the initiative over the coming six months.
