New Zealand’s retail sales decline in June quarter

New Zealand’s retail sales declined in the June quarter, with nine out of 11 industry sectors reporting lower turnover, Stats NZ data shows.

Total retail sales fell 1.6 per cent year over year to $28.8 billion during the June quarter, with motor vehicles and parts posting the largest decrease rate of 10.7 per cent to $3.8 billion. Stats NZ said that inflation had been factored out of the data.

Electrical and electronic goods dipped 10.4 per cent to $840 million while non-store and commission-based retailing dropped 10.2 per cent to $461 million.

Other industries that witnessed lower sales were department stores, furniture, hardware, and recreational goods.

Meanwhile, pharmaceutical and other store-based retailing had the highest growth rate of 7.2 per cent to $2.01 billion, followed by specialised food, which rose 4 per cent to $469 million.

Supermarket and grocery stores grew 3.8 per cent to $6.51 billion, the highest turnover among all industries. Food and beverage services grew 1.4 per cent to $3.82 billion.
