Wonky Box has introduced a fruit-only package featuring New Zealand’s ugly fruit in cooperation with Kiwi artist Adam Popovic.

To mark the launch, the company has asked Kiwis to submit photographs of their most strangely shaped fruits, demonstrating that eccentric aesthetics do not mean sacrificing quality.

“Working closely with local growers, we know that wonky-looking fruit is just as nutritious and delicious as its perfect-looking counterparts,” said co-founder Angus Simms.

“Through this competition, we aim to really raise awareness about food waste and encourage people to appreciate all types of produce, while also having a bit of fun!”

Popovic will create a photographic print inspired by the winning fruit, which will be auctioned on Trade Me alongside a fruit-themed package of products from local brands. All proceeds will benefit Wonky Box’s charitable partner and Aotearoa’s largest food rescue organisation, KiwiHarvest.

The fruit-only box and the Wonky Fruit Competition are the latest moves in its continuous mission to challenge customer preconceptions of produce and reduce food waste across the region.

Wonky Box has diverted two million kilograms of product from going to waste while also providing relief to local growers and high-quality produce to consumers.
