Deadline looms for retailers to upgrade older Eftpos machines

Retailers should check the age of their Eftpos terminals – they risk disconnection from New Zealand’s payment network if their device is found to be running on the older PCI 3.x standard after June 30.

“It’s encouraging to hear from banks and terminal vendors who have been directly communicating the changes to merchants that the vast majority have replaced the older devices already,” Payments NZ CEO Steve Wiggins said.

“However, there may still be some merchants that are yet to make these important upgrades.”

Wiggins emphasised the importance of updating the Eftpos devices in minimising card fraud risk.

The CEO noted that the due date has been extended twice due to equipment supply constraints experienced during the pandemic.
