Counties Manukau South Police will launch the operation aimed at reducing retail theft in the district as part of an ongoing commitment to prevent retail crime.

The ongoing retail operation is already showing results, with some repeat offenders facing several counts.

Ten people have been charged with shoplifting so far, with additional charges expected to be made in the following days.

Inspector Matt Hoyes, Counties Manukau South Area prevention manager, says police will conduct high visibility patrols in shopping malls and CBDs, with a particular focus on supermarkets and other significant merchants.

“Police are continuing to take offending against retail businesses in our community seriously, identifying offenders and holding them to account,” he said.

“Police and retailers cannot prevent crime alone and rely on the help of the community to stop this illegal activity and the social harm it causes.”

Work will continue with stores and businesses on easy steps they can take to avoid being targeted. Hoyes says police are continuing to collaborate with partners to minimise harms on town centres and shops.

To combat retail theft, Counties Manukau Police encourage members of the public to report suspicious behaviour in and around businesses and malls to a member of staff or security.

People are asked to continue reporting offending as it occurs by dialling 111, or to report matters after the fact by calling 105.
