With Christmas around the corner, Foodstuffs has revealed last year’s top food trends.

“We regularly survey our customers across Pak’nSave, New World and Four Square – and the desire for a simple, fuss-free Christmas is the main message we’re hearing, and our teams have been working hard to deliver this,” said Chris Day, Foodstuffs’ head of customer insights and intelligence.

Salad bags were a top seller last year with Foodstuffs selling more than 2.3 million units followed by bananas, blueberries, potatoes, strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, avocados and cucumbers – all appearing in the top 10 most sold produce items list.

For proteins, customers shopped for ham followed by chicken, lamb, fish and turkey.  The classic leg of lamb was crowned a “perennial kiwi favourite” with Foodstuffs selling more than half a million units across the nation.

For a sweet fix, 773 fresh cream units were sold which is an increase of 700 per cent on a weekly average while 15,000 readymade Pavlovas were bought.

“The great thing is our customers are recognising that frozen is a great way to be well prepared for Christmas, and our stores often see people do a bulk shop for the holidays earlier, some even in late November to help spread out the cost and their trips to the supermarket,”  said Day.

About 47 per cent of respondents said they’d be sitting down for a Christmas lunch around midday rather than a traditional Christmas dinner.
