Super Retail Group delivers strong first-half sales, online growth

Super Retail Group reported first-half results delivering $1.7 billion in revenue, supported by a strong inventory position despite supply chain disruptions. 

The strong rebound position in the second quarter saw gross margins lift to 46.7 per cent above pre-Covid levels. The group’s like-for-like sales grew 3.6 per cent in the final 10 weeks, and online sales of the business increased 64 per cent – generating $389 million representing 23 per cent of total group sales. 

And, the group generated $226 million through omnichannel sales via Click & Collect, contributing 58 per cent to total group online sales.

Rebel’s total sales declined by 2.9 per cent to $605.6 million as the peak Christmas trading period was impacted by a reduction in footfall in shopping centres and stores. However, online sales grew by 56 per cent contributing $187.4 million and representing 31 per cent of total sales. 

BCF saw a decline in sales growth recording $418.5 million at 2.2 per cent. Online sales of the brand grew to $76 million representing 18 of total sales.

Rebound sales for Macpac were strong despite store closures in NSW, Victoria and New Zealand. Key growth was seen in rainwear and insulation categories in Australia however in New Zealand, like-for-like sales fells 9.4 per cent due to lockdowns and reduced tourism. 

Macpac’s total sales increased by 4 per cent to $65.5 million while online sales grew by 45 per cent to $18.7 million, representing 29 per cent of sales. 

Group MD and CEO, Anthony Heraghty welcomed the strong sales performance in the first half.

“Our omni-retail capability and execution has been key to meeting customer demand, underpinning a record digital sales performance driven by uptake in Click&Collect,” said Heraghty.

The group has also had a positive start to the second half recording a good sales momentum across all brands of the business: with Rebel benefitting from back-to-school sales, BCF delivering growth in its boating and camping categories, and Macpac registering good sales in the summer apparel and equipment category.
