Shu Uemura’s first global flagship store to open this month

Japanese beauty brand Shu Uemura has unveiled its flagship store design in Omotesando, Tokyo, resembling a giant makeup box.

Called ‘Shu Tokyo Makeup Box’, the global flagship store’s exterior design was inspired by the jet-black makeup box used by the brand’s founder Shu Uemura. Inside the store, a giant Japanese-style kokeshi doll was installed, featuring a tagline ‘play, create master your own beauty’.

The store’s launch is a homage to the brand’s first beauty boutique which was located in Omotesando in 1983.

Spanning four rooms, the Omotesando flagship store will offer a selection of cosmetics and skincare products, including limited-edition items sold exclusively at the store. The flagship will also house a communication space featuring an interactive experience that enhances self-expression.

Shu Uemura Omotesando will open its door to the public on April 16. In celebration of the launch, Shu Uemura will collaborate with calligrapher Manmi to introduce artwork that depicts the characters “Hide” using the brand’s signature colors, black, red, and white.

Founded in 1967, the brand was known as Japan Makeup before changing its name to Shu Uemura in 1983.
