David Jones’ Auckland store to open in November

David Jones opened a store in Wellington in 2016.

Department store chain David Jones is reportedly on track to open its Auckland store in Westfield’s Newmarket shopping centre by mid-November.

David Jones’ retail director, Aaron Farguna, told the NZ Herald that the store’s construction is progressing to schedule.

According to the report, work is currently underway on the department store’s initial fit out, and a recruitment drive to hire more than 100 sales reps, stylists and marketing and logistics specialists is set to kick off next week.

The 7000sqm store located across two levels will be David Jones’ second in New Zealand. The Australian retailer, which is owned by South Africa’s Woolworths Holdings, launched in New Zealand in 2016, with a location in Wellington.

David Jones’ Auckland store will reportedly include hundreds of brands, interactive fitting rooms, a beauty hall and designer accessories area.

In March, Scentre Group, which operates the Westfield shopping centres in Australia and New Zealand, provided an update on the $790 million redevelopment of its Newmarket centre, the biggest shopping mall in the country.

The revamped centre will open in three to four stages, the property firm said, with the first opening expected as early as July. The final stage is expected to open by December 2019. It has been under construction for two year.
