New Flight Centre NZ MD ready for take-off

FlightCentreFlight Centre (NZ) has announced the return of David Coombes as the company’s new MD.

Coombes, who has been with the company for 15 years, spent almost three years in New Zealand between 2011 and 2013 as GM of product. He returned to the business this week ready to take the pilot’s seat and lead the NZ team in what Flight Centre expects will be “an exciting year within the travel industry”. He will succeed Chris Greive, who announced his departure late last year.

‘Coombsie’, as he is affectionately known, started his career with Flight Centre Travel Group more than 15 years ago as a travel consultant in Brisbane, Australia. He’s since risen through the ranks to his most recent position as senior VP product in the US.

Greive will officially finish at the end of February 2016 after almost two years as MD, after more than 30 years with the company. He previously led the New Zealand business from 1990 to 2004. Although Greive officially steps down as MD he will continue as an advisor to the business.

“Chris has enjoyed great success in New Zealand during the past two years and we congratulate him on his achievements during this period. We look forward to his continued contribution to the company as he embarks on this next venture,” FCTG executive Rob Flint said.

Greive says Coombes is taking over Flight Centre (NZ) Ltd at a time when the company is in a strong position with consumers.

“With Kiwis travelling more than ever the industry is booming right now. With significant investments made in the last 12 months and a strong focus on innovation, this last year has seen us continue our tradition of growing market share and really cement ourselves as the leading travel retailer in NZ,” Greive says.
