Easter period skews spending

smartpay, tap and go, contactless, purchase, credit card, paymentRetail spending on cards through BNZ’s electronic network fell 6.12 per cent for the week ending April 26, compared to the same week last year, according to the BNZ MarketView report.

Despite the apparent drop, a couple of key days contributed to the figure.

The first is Easter Monday. While last week’s figures were inflated by going up against Good Friday in 2014, this week’s figures felt the impact of going up against Easter Monday in 2014, a day which generally has lots of consumer activity.

The amount spent on the Monday of this week was actually down 11.1 per cent on last year (Easter Monday).

The second is Anzac Day. This year Anzac Day fell on a Saturday, which means the statutory day off is the following Monday. Last year, Anzac Day was on Friday, meaning a three day weekend for the Friday to Sunday period.

Storetypes with the largest rises in spending this week were travel agents, up 48.3 per cent; other automotive services, up 29.3 per cent; and other food, up 8.8 per cent.
