Retail apprenticeship scheme takes off with 700 inductees this year

An apprenticeship system rolling out this year in New Zealand’s retail industry has already attracted more than 700 registrations.

The ServiceIQ Retail Apprenticeship, which includes two years of training, covers full retail-related skills and knowledge, including sales and business performance, applicable legislation, loss prevention, and customer experience, service, and complaints.

“Apprenticeships are relatively new to retail, so it’s fantastic to see employers welcome the concept,” said Andrew McSweeney, CEO at ServiceIQ. “Offering apprenticeships helps to attract good people – and retain them – in businesses while providing a solid and supporting structure for their training.”

McSweeney said retailers can choose from a range that covers short induction training; full New Zealand Certificate retail, distribution, team leadership, and management training programs, as well as the apprenticeship.

“There are some amazing jobs out there and a program like this will reinforce to employees and potential employees that they will be well supported, trained, and given all the key requirements for a successful career,” added Greg Harford, CEO of industry association Retail NZ.
