Much-loved Auckland record store Flying Out is closing its doors after what it called a “perfect storm” of challenges.

The Pitt Street store has been trading since 2013, before describing itself as “one of Aotearoa’s favourite record stores”. But in an update to customers on Instagram, the company has bid farewell.

“This is the hardest thing we’ve ever had to write, but unfortunately, it’s goodbye from Flying Out,” the statement read.

“Over the last few years, a pandemic, three festival cancellations, the effects of ongoing roadworks, the [City Rail Link] construction and the continuing economic downturn have become an unpleasant, perfect storm.”

Describing it as a “true labour of love”, Flying Out’s spokesperson expressed gratitude to its staff, customers, suppliers, and artists. ”Your love and loyalty have been truly appreciated. What happens next is still being figured out. We will be in touch over the coming weeks,” the statement added.

The company’s website is also no longer in operation.

“Please go out and support small locally owned businesses, especially record stores; they are a labour of love from someone in your community and supporting them supports your neighbourhood,” Flying Out’s statement ended.
