New Zealanders are being urged not to panic amid pressures on global oil supplies, with politicians and Retail NZ joining the call.
Both Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Finance Minister Nicola Willis have said they are looking at securing stable fuel supplies if the Iran conflict is prolonged, as well as discussing financial support for individuals.
Now, Retail NZ’s CEO Carolyn Young has entered the discussion, calling for shoppers to remain calm.
“We are reminding shoppers there is no need to panic, with our fuel partners assuring us there are adequate stocks of fuel in the country at the moment,” Young said.
“We’re asking New Zealanders to just fuel what you need.”
Young added that the supply of essential groceries will not be impacted by the ongoing conflict.
“There is a good stock of everyday products in retail stores, while transport movements – both within the country and imports – are flowing freely. Retailers are also currently absorbing any increases in costs where they can,” she said.
“We would also like to thank the government for the work it is doing to shore up New Zealand’s fuel supply and create a plan to ensure our country continues to secure the fuel we need.”
