Auckland Transport’s “Bus to the Mall” campaign has been described as a misuse of public funds at the expense of small businesses by a small business group, the Dominion Road Business Association (DRBA).
The DRBA pointed out that $223,168 in public funds have been spent on the campaign amid a rising cost of living.
The campaign also promoted private malls instead of local shops, which the group says affects the livelihoods of small business owners.
It also says Auckland Transport failed to withdraw the advertisements fully as promised, reflecting a lack of accountability and transparency.
“While we welcome initiatives to encourage public transport use, it is unacceptable for AT to use taxpayer money to drive customers away from local shops and into the arms of large corporations,” said the DRBA.
“We are particularly concerned about the impact of this campaign on Dominion Road, where AT has not only actively promoted malls but also cancelled local bus routes, further hindering access to our vibrant businesses.”
