Woolworths will open its first ‘supermarket for bees’ in Auckland’s Tamaki Makaurau from September 28 to October 6.
The launch is in partnership with experts Bees Up Top and Auckland’s Ambury Farm, offering Kiwis educational bee-related activities.
The small aisles will be filled with bee-friendly blossoms, including lavender, manuka, and cosmos.
Bees pollinate 70 per cent of all crops consumed by humans, according to Woolworths New Zealand, and hence play a key role in fresh food at supermarkets. Pesticides, climate change, and habitat destruction, on the other hand, are putting bee numbers in danger around the world.
“We want to encourage Kiwis and their families to get outside this spring and become more aware of these amazing creatures and the challenges they face,” said Woolworths New Zealand GM of fruit and vegetables, Ryan McMullen.
Woolworths is encouraging customers to join in the free event, and tickets are available online.
