Foodstuffs North Island has opened a new cross-dock and depot facility in Hastings, investing $20 million in the local community.

The 12000 sqm site will be used for cross-docking, where bulk orders carried by larger trucks will be broken down into small orders for delivery to local stores.

The multi-temperature facility is fitted with six truck-loading bays, automatic gates, laser lights for walkways, CCTV and a fully electric forklift fleet.

Foodstuffs North Island CEO, Chris Quin, describes the new depot as a “real game-changer” in the region.

“It’ll help ensure food is distributed efficiently, safely, and with the highest levels of quality.”

The facility will also be used for clearing cargo from import containers arriving at Port Napier helping in the efficient distribution of supplies across the North Island.

During the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, and before its formal commissioning, the site was used as a “staging post” for loading helicopters, trucks and other vehicles to help get supplies to remote communities in the Hawke’s Bay region that were isolated due to road closures.
