Foodstuffs North Island is collaborating with community organisations to open social stores across the island to combat food insecurity in New Zealand communities.

Foodstuffs has already opened social supermarkets in Wellington, Kaitaia, Tokoroa, Whangarei, and Otumoetai as part of its “Here for New Zealand” program, allowing people and groups dealing with food insecurity to shop in a supermarket-style setting with goods that are typically free or available for a donation.

“Rising inflation and cost of living pressure means budgets are being stretched more than ever, and many hard-working Kiwis are really struggling,” said Chris Quin, Foodstuffs North Island CEO.

“Since partnering with the Wellington City Mission to open New Zealand’s first social supermarket 18 months ago, we’ve been humbled by the response and see social supermarkets as being an important way we can help everyday New Zealanders get access to the groceries they need with dignity.”

The social supermarkets, which are expected to open in 2024, are a collaboration between Foodstuffs North Island, local store owners, and community partners. The local store owners will collaborate closely with the community partners to offer shelves, refrigerators, and freezers.

“Every social supermarket will be unique because they are designed, owned and operated by the community partner who tailors them to meet the needs of the local community,” said Willa Hand, Foodstuffs North Island head of membership experience.

Furthermore, local business owners will provide training, coaching, and mentorship on how to run a lucrative store. With an eye on the future and long-term relationships, Foodstuffs North Island claims the operators also provide ongoing support and assistance with stock replenishment, store operations, and keeping the doors open.
