Remaining Dick Smith stores’ final hours

dicksmith1The remaining Dick Smith stores in Australia and New Zealand will close doors for good next month.

The receivers of the failed consumer electronics chain announced to shareholders and creditors that the remaining  stores in Australia and New Zealand will be closed progressively between April 27 and May 3.

The majority of Dick Smith’s 390 stores across New Zealand and Australia began closing in April, with the final 21 slated to shut their doors on May 3.

“This has been a difficult and uncertain time for employees and we have really appreciated their assistance and commitment,” James Stewart, from receiver, Ferrier Hodgson, said in a statement.

He said all New Zealand employee entitlements will be made a priority ahead of secured creditors and are expected to be paid in full. The closing of all Dick Smith stores has impacted around 430 staff in New Zealand.

Dick Smith has been forced to close after receivers were unable to find a buyer for the bricks and mortar stores. Stewart said in February that while they received a significant number of expressions of interest from local and overseas parties, the sale process has unfortunately not resulted in any acceptable offers for the group as a whole or for New Zealand or Australia as standalone businesses.

“The offers were either significantly below liquidation values or highly conditional or both,” he said.

Australian online retail giant, Kogan.com, bought the brand and its online business in March and will take control of Dick Smith’s Australian and New Zealand online business from June 1.
