Retail: Can you share some of the proudest moments of your career so far?
Haley Koo: In my six-year tenure at Godiva, I have moved from retail operations and store launch management to national retail manager. In 2017, I was behind the launch of both the retail channel of Godiva Australia as well as the brand into the market.
Over time, I have progressed into a role that now spans almost every touchpoint of the business, including new store openings, product development and packaging transformation. In particular in the last year, I led the design, taste profile and launch of the Chocolate Pearls range and its unique in-store offering by way of life-size chocolate dispensers. I have led the change in the gradual transformation of food and beverage packaging to align with modern customer values while preserving our heritage traditions.
IR: What are some of your long-term career goals?
HK: I hope to revolutionise the perception of the chocolate business from a traditional bricks-and-mortar one to experiential spaces, and to use the power of chocolate as a transformative element in people’s day-to-day lives to help them transcend the mundanity of existence with the taste of chocolate.
IR: Can you discuss a few people who have had a significant impact on your career?
HK: I am extremely lucky to have met amazing mentors along the way who have helped to mould and support me to become who I am today. Shane Hills, country manager at Godiva, who continuously prompts me to search beyond the boundaries of creativity in product and operations. Grant Inches, CEO at Gewürzhaus, and his consistent delivery as a leader prompts me to assess my own standards (by way of “what would Grant do?”) Lastly, Andrea Mintetti, now finance manager at Jo Mercer, who taught me how to “follow the money”, helping me develop a commercial mindset to steer retail growth strategy.
IR: What do you consider your biggest career achievements to be, and where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
HK: There is such an opportunity at Godiva to grow more and more. Personally, I want to be largely known for my expertise in chocolate and delivering great experiences in retail. In Australia, I especially hope to revolutionise the perception of chocolate businesses from traditional bricks-and-mortar to experiential spaces and to use the power of chocolate as a transformative element in people’s day to day life, helping them transcend the mundanity of existence with the taste of true chocolate.
IR: What do you love most about working in the retail industry?
HK: I love the people-centric focus of working in retail, both customers and my team, my humans! This way, I bring the customer into the heart of large-scale decisions like consumer packaging and engagement. In recent years, the availability and depth of access to data has only helped me understand people more fully and to drive decisions in a meaningful way.
