Wendy’s workers walk

Wendy'sWendy’s staff in Auckland have walked off the job on Tuesday to protest what they say are unreasonable public holiday conditions.

The employees claim they are being denied an alternative holiday when they work on a public holiday, however, Wendy’s disagrees, saying the workers have no right to a public holiday as they are on ‘zero hour contracts’ that don’t have regular shifts, making work on a public holiday no different to that of a normal day.

Workers at the Dominion Rd, Kingsland store in Auckland also walked off the job on Christmas Eve in protest of the zero hour contracts and irregular 10 minute tea breaks.

Wendy’s employees have been pushing for the company to introduce an industry standard 15 minute tea break, in line with those given to fast food staff at stores owned by rival, Restaurant Brands.

Staff from the Auckland stores will meet at the Royal Oak store at 1pm to discuss the action.
