New Zealand’s largest online auction site, Trade Me, has revealed its top motor listings of the year, with the number one spot being held by a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12.
Attracting 104,371 viewers, the famed vehicle had an asking price of $100,000. It beat Formula One star Liam Lawson’s own 2000 Subaru Forester, which came in second with 88,633. The latter sold for $35,300.
Trade Me’s most expensive listing in its top-10 most-viewed was a 2024 Lamborghini Revuelto, priced at $1,123,000.
“This year’s list proves that whether it’s an ultra-exclusive supercar or a meticulously-maintained classic, Kiwis are drawn to listings that stand out in terms of rarity, performance, and luxury models,” Brendan Hall, head of Trade Me Motors, said.
“The collective asking price of the entire top ten list equals almost four million dollars, which shows that even if they aren’t buying, Kiwis love to check out the top-tier end of the car market.”
A further three cars in the top 10 had asking prices above $500,000. Hall said that the attraction of these luxury vehicles was just one of the trends in the country’s consumer base.
“The DeLorean, famous for its role in Back to the Future, brings a huge amount of movie magic to the table,” he added.
“The massive viewing numbers prove that the dream of owning a piece of pop culture history is very much alive, and at a six-figure price, it’s a relatively accessible classic compared to the supercars on this list.
“The blend of listings this year truly reflects the diverse tastes of Kiwis, spanning nostalgia, luxury, performance, and serious recreation.”
