The Redress Design Awards has revealed the 30 young sustainable designers to make the semifinals in this year’s awards. They come from all over the world, including one from New Zealand, two each from Australia and Vietnam, as well as the UK, the US and China, among other countries.

The Kiwi designer is Laura Borrmeister who has created designs in the womenswear section.

Borrmeister holds a BDes (Hons) in fashion design from Massey University. Her collection, called ‘Let Me Be Me’, focuses on business casual wear for feminity and suited to every woman’s shape.

It features upcycle secondhand, old textiles sourced from curtains and swatches, primarily of cotton, with longevity and recyclability.

“It is heartbreaking to see the damage caused by the wasted fabric that ends up in landfills, and as a fashion designer, I cannot conscionably be a part of that process,” Borrmeister said.

The Redress Design Award is a sustainable fashion design competition aiming to educate and engage young fashion designers around the world about sustainability and encourage circular fashion systems.

The People’s Choice Award of the Redress Design Award 2022 is open for public voting until May 9 on the Redress Design Awards website, with the winner going directly to the final. Judges will determine the other nine who make the final.
