Countdown has opened a new supermarket in the Wynyard Quarter building, serving nearby office workers and apartment residents.

Spanning 650sqm on the ground floor of the Auckland building, the metro store is the chain’s second-smallest store.

“It has been specially designed, with more than 4500 products which have been tailored to the growing residential population nearby, as well as local workers and commuters,” said a spokesperson.

Matt Grainger, acting GM of property at Countdown, said the Wynyard Quarter store has a unique customer base, where people are looking for variety along with staples.

“Supermarkets became an even more integral part of people’s lives and on this side of the inner city there’s been a notable lack of choice,” he said.

Infratil Infrastructure property development director, Andrew Lamb, said the business is planning for more commercial space.

“The next two buildings will be commercial,” Lamb said. “We have resource consent for one but that’s going to be tenant-led because 2020 has been a pretty tough year and we’re going to have to take into account where the market is.”
