Bargain Chemist to bring store count to 30 by 2021

Discount pharmacy operator Bargain Chemist will open a new store in Wellington next week and two new stores in Christchurch shortly thereafter.

The locally-owned retailer said it plans to open more stores across the country before the end of the year, bringing its total to 12. It aims to have 20 stores nationwide by 2021.

Bargain Chemist opened its first store last year and currently has six locations across Christchurch and Auckland.

The new 538sqm-store that will open at the Porirua Mega Centre in Wellington next week, March 18, will offer discounted perfumes, cosmetics and a wide range of vitamin supplements.

Bargain Chemist said it will also feature free prescriptions on fully funded items including specialists care and dental work.

Vince Southee of Colliers International, who negotiated the new lease, said Porirua and the surrounding areas will welcome the new cut-price discounts for pharmacy goods and services.

“The retail scene is very positive in Porirua, particularly with the eventual opening of both Adventure Park and Transmission Gully.”

Southee said Mega Centre offers a diverse mix including Beds R Us, which recently leased a sizeable space directly opposite the entrance to Harvey Norman and Flooring Design, also to open a new store soon.

Bargain Chemist director Atif Malkonyan said they chose Porirua for their new location because of its central location to the wider Wellington area coupled with its diversity.
