POLL: What was your biggest challenge in the 2019 holiday period?
While many Australian retailers entered the Christmas period with lowered expectations, New Zealand retailers were generally in better spirits.
In a 2019 poll of Inside Retail New Zealand readers, 43 per cent said they expected sales to be higher, compared to just 20 per cent of readers responding to the same poll on Inside Retail Australia.
This tracks with the broader data, which shows the New Zealand retail sector has been outperforming Australia for the past few years, according to a report by Retail NZ.
But while the Christmas period may have been positive for New Zealand retailers, they were not immune from the trend of Black Friday pulling forward holiday spending, or global events like the US-China trade war, Brexit and climate strikes, which have crimped consumer sentiment.
