The retail industry is a fundamental part of any developed nation’s economy in terms of revenue and employment, contributing to economic growth and prosperity. Such an important industry requires well-educated and professional managers who have the skills and subject-specific knowledge to provide the expertise and leadership it needs.

In view of this, Massey University now has New Zealand’s first degree solely focused on retail, Massey University’s Bachelor of Retail and Business Management, on offer. It represents a key milestone in retail education.

Massey University is well-known for its cutting-edge, innovative, and industry-relevant educational programs. This qualification is no exception. The program is unique and is a significant achievement: a robust bachelor degree with a strong practical focus.

Developed in partnership with some of NZ’s best-known and respected retailers, the program is based around core business and management subjects combined with industry-related retail content. Students can opt to specialise in areas including design, marketing, logistics and supply chain management, valuation and property management, and banking.

The program focuses on developing the skills students will need in the real world of work and employment. It involves classroom teaching alongside three mandatory internships, high profile industry guest speakers, simulations, and field visits. Throughout the program, students practise the skills of analysis, creativity and evaluation, as well as the more practical skills of communication and teamwork.

Students can take advantage of various international exchange opportunities in the UK, Europe, and North America. The program’s industry advisory board also ensures that the Bachelor of Retail and Business Management remains both practical and academically relevant and up-to-date.
