Another stage of Canterbury’s Rolleston Square Shopping Centre has reached completion with the opening of its retail, service and health facilities.
Located at the junction of Rolleston Dr and Masefield Dr, the new hub houses the Coffee Culture Café, Westpac Bank, Upmarket Hair Salon, Unichem Pharmacy, Snap Fitness Gym and a Family Health Centre.
The development is being designed and built to support the Selwyn District’s rapid growth, which is predicted to grow from 9600 to almost 26,000 residents by 2028.
The Buchan Group was appointed to develop and implement the master plan for the expanded town centre in 2012.
Raylene McEwan, Buchan Group practice manager, said the project has been designed as a domestic scale 1800sqm building to fit within the existing town’s residential framework.
It is a prime example of the new community spaces for district centres, designed to meet the growing needs of the Rolleston district, she said.
There is a focus on natural elements, with quality design materials including raw finished products such as concrete, ply, glass and galvanised steel.
The complex has a Structex Engineers Importance Level Four rating as a structure designed with special post disaster functions.
It is able to be converted into an emergency hub for epidemic or natural disaster triage, and has a self contained electricity generation and water supply.
