Instagram takes the cake

Auckland restaurant Miss Clawdy is introducing ‘cake currency’ to make the most of the Instagram trend of photographing food.

During the restaurant’s first birthday celebrations during the week of September 22 – 28, diners will be able to purchase the house special – Miss Clawdy’s birthday cake – with an Instagram post.

“The last 12 months have been an amazing ride for Miss Clawdy and creating a cake currency is our way to give back on our birthday and share the love with our loyal customers,” Tom Wiley, Miss Clawdy co-owner, said.

Diners simply order the cake, post an Instagram photo of it, show the restaurant staff and there is no charge for the dessert.

Using the hashtag #cakecurrency and tag @MissClawdynz finalises the social payment.

Using social currency to ‘pay’ for a meal makes the most of the growing phenomenon of Instagrams of food, with desserts the most popular type of food post.

The dessert is a bespoke birthday cupcake created by Karla Goodwin of Bluebells Cakery, and embodies the rich Southern flavours and magic of Miss Clawdy.
